History of Flu Pandemics

Each year, a certain strain of influenza becomes prevalent and strikes. When this happens in one country or area it is called an epidemic; when it happens around the world it is called a pandemic .

Pandemics are characterized both by the number of people affected and by the fact that young and healthy people who are thought to be able to fight off the disease tend to be affected as severely as elderly people and more vulnerable groups.

When a pandemic does emerge, it may occur in more than one wave, several months apart.
