Unmasking the mysterious 7/7 conspiracy theorist

June 30, 2009

In the absence of a public inquiry into the 7 July bombings, conspiracy theories have filled the vacuum. One of the more inflammatory involves a man hiding behind an Arabic-sounding pseudonym taken from a sci-fi film starring Sting, says the BBC’s Mike Rudin.

De Menezes officer cleared of deception

May 27, 2009

A senior police surveillance officer who admitted tampering with his evidence during the inquest into the death of Jean Charles de Menezes was cleared today by an official investigation.

The Special Branch Officer deleted text from his computer note before speaking to the inquest in October last year.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission said the officer, known as “Owen”, had acted naively, but found no evidence of “deliberate deception”.

MI5 and police came across July 7 ringleader six times but never identified him as a threat – report

Inquiry into 7/7 branded ‘whitewash’ by victims

May 20, 2009

Survivors and victims’ relatives of the July 7 London bombings today branded an official inquiry into the terror attacks “a complete whitewash”. The report by the Parliament Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC) published today said that it was “understandable and reasonable” that the bombers had not been detected and that the judgments made by the security service before July 2005 could not be criticised.

“This isn’t an independent committee as they claim. It has been a group of MPs that have been hand-picked by the Prime Minister. We don’t know what evidence they received in secret, if it was challenged and how it was challenged. They got it wrong the first time round so how can the public possibly have confidence in this report.”

A report examining what MI5 knew about the 7 July London bombers before their 2005 attacks is to be published later.

The parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee report was ordered after a trial heard ringleader Mohammad Sidique Khan had been followed in 2004.

The fresh report is expected to detail the nature of MI5’s surveillance of him and accomplice Shehzad Tanweer.
